Finding employment for when you leave university can be a daunting prospect, but there is plenty of help and advice available before and after you finish your studies. Your university careers service should be your first port of call. They can provide you with useful advice on cover letters and CV’s, relevant contacts for your chosen industry sector, and other job seeking tips.
Graduate recruitment and careers fairs are also a great opportunity for you to find out more about all the different opportunities open to you. They could help you make some important decisions about your career, and even help with your job hunting. Normally held in autumn, and in the summer, they are either small local events, or regional fairs. Some may be part of a nationwide network of careers fairs, run by AGCAS (Association Of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) members. There’s normally the chance to attend talks, drop in sessions, and workshops, and meet employers from many different industry sectors, many of whom will run specific graduate training programs.
At some point, employment agencies will come into the job seeking equation, and you’ll often find companies that either deal specifically with graduate employment, or will have a member of staff specialising in that sector. It may be worth contacting a student employment agency during your studies as well, particularly if you’ll be looking for summer work, sandwich placements, or other work experience.
